It's a shame this community has to be represented by this wannabe third ecosystem. ![]() Gnome and its developers set a bad example of what an open source project is. If you go to a Linux conference you can see Macbooks everywhere left and right. Speaking of proprietary software, those same devs don't even use their own product. Also see: the infamous GTK file picker issue still open after 16 and a half years. They just don't care about the end-user, only what they think is good and right. If you want money that much then why are you contributing to a non-profit project? I'm pretty sure Microsoft, Google or Apple would welcome you with their arms wide open. The developers themselves are not only elitists and self-proclaimed "political activists", but also so full of themselves they throw a temper tantrum over a user that chose to donate to the project by themselves instead of giving money indirectly through a big company's proprietary service. Heavily sponsored by big companies, forcing their own ecosystem and monopoly, pushing their own standards into other projects. This is why GNOME is the tumor on the back of open source projects. It's way more than a simple text editor, though, but the authors seem fine to provide binaries for WIndows, too, and free of charge.Īnd besides, u/NateNate60 donated money to the Gnome project and you have the guts to tell him he donated it wrong? Well, then pay back the money he donated to Gnome. I'd advice u/NateNate60 to look at Geany if he really needs a Gnome text editor for windows. There are hundreds of apps like this that one can get for free, which makes this even more ridiculous. Even more so if the app in question is a simple text editor. So you are saying it does not take real work to develop gedit or the whole of Gnome on Linux? Because last time I checked, we did not have to pay for it there.įrankly speaking, charging for a compiled version of an Open Source app on one platform, which is available for free on all the other platforms, is kinda stupid. It took real work to make the latest gedit available on Windows and keep it updated and supported and the developer deserves to be paid for that work. There's no need to respond with name-calling because the facts here make you uncomfortable. Look, you came on this site and asked for advice and I've given you helpful info. So to see someone who has the money refuse to pay the developer, because I dunno, maybe someone hates Microsoft enough to not use a Microsoft service while using Microsoft Windows, it is very appropriate for me to speak up. The gedit developer stopped working on gedit for a while (years I think), in part because it wasn't paying his bills. Similarly, Microsoft developers deserve to be paid for their work, and I believe 75 cents is reasonable. ![]() Gedit has not been available on Windows in the last decade except for rare versions like the one you installed. Since $0 of what you donated went to the actual gedit developer and you got a clearly inferior version, then yes, I am saying that you donated wrong. The Microsoft Store version will also automatically update to new versions. The free Windows version you got is completely unsupported and is a much older version than the one you can get from the Microsoft Store. ![]()
